Yvonne shut the door to powerplant four and locked the keypad. Not feeling that was good enough, she raised her laser rifle and fired a constant beam on half power from top to bottom. The steel of the door and the frame welded together in fantastic fashion. If someone wanted to get back in there, they’d have to work for it. Arkal and Norkeval came back around the corner as she was preparing to run back to number eight and escape back through the dungeon. They both had pleased looks on their faces when they saw her still standing there.

Arkal looked over her at the door. “I see you made our job a little easier, Human. It’ll take a lot of effort for anyone to get in there now.”

“You’re welcome,” Yvonne answered.

Norkeval chuckled.

Yvonne decided to push her luck a little more. “Say, you two honorable Sheingal warriors wouldn’t be interested in escorting a lady back out to the main battle so she can kick a little more ass before the day is done, would you?”

Arkal and Norkeval looked at each other, then back to her, and grinned.

“Well,” Norkeval said, “I think it would be the right thing to do. Don’t you, Arkal?”

“I do,” Arkal answered. “What’s your name, Human?”

“Jacobs,” Yvonne answered. “Specialist Yvonne Jacobs of the Bolts. You can just call me Yvonne, though.”

They both nodded to her.

“Follow us, Yvonne,” Arkal said and turned toward the main entrance.

Norkeval fell in next to him, and Yvonne found herself behind a wall of wings.

“Hey, guys,” she said, “shouldn’t we go back the way I came in? There are guards posted up this way.”

Norkeval looked back at her over his shoulder. “Don’t worry. It’s already taken care of.”

They moved quickly and were soon at the main doors. Arkal shoved them open and stepped out with confidence. Norkeval and Yvonne followed, though Yvonne brought her rifle up, ready for an attack. Four more imperial guards stared down at her. All had rifles, all wore light armor, and all had some sort of melee weapon as a backup. Two of them were blue, one green, and one a bright green.

“Charleean, Brograll, Urponal, and Murwan,” Arkal said pointing at each of them as he said their names. “All fine warriors, and all sick and tired of Gortal’s reign of terror and cruelty. We’ll not only guide you back to the battle, Yvonne—” his eyes narrowed, and his features hardened, “—we’ll help you and Dahkal win it.”

Norkeval and all four new guards gave her a single nod of agreement.

“Hell, yeah!” Yvonne shouted. “I was really dreading having to go back through the dungeon.”

“We have a dungeon?” the bright green guard asked.
